The last few months have been busy, with one kid in sports, one kid now in pep band, my job and trying to improve my photography and photoshop skills. Some things I've learned on the photo-taking and editing:<br />
<ul><li style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">A higher ISO setting lets you get a faster shutter speed. Sounds so simple, but definitely a "a-ha" moment for me. I had always thought a high ISO was only for when there wasn't much light. Not so! Even if you're shooting in sun, a faster shutter speed lets you capture fast moving objects like runners in a cross country race: </li>

I couldn't have gotten this (outdoors during an actual race) shot if I'd tried purposely a million times, but lucky for me it just happened and my camera settings were in my favor... straight out of camera:</div></li>

Using tags that can easily be pulled out and put back later allows you to really utilize the recipes without worrying about ruining the album itself.<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_ZVQ8ucMhY1SbgPn-Z72DPu8UM7nEUehtceZOsZ9_mnzemYsQOja6FlJhB2u_lqzcUDsldu4u_PLT1hEhvIi1Xot9zYuvfr4goRTS8aIbNId-PKxZv2T8qO4njutUQAqdR-Kw4imE4Pw/s1600/7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="382" qx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgn_ZVQ8ucMhY1SbgPn-Z72DPu8UM7nEUehtceZOsZ9_mnzemYsQOja6FlJhB2u_lqzcUDsldu4u_PLT1hEhvIi1Xot9zYuvfr4goRTS8aIbNId-PKxZv2T8qO4njutUQAqdR-Kw4imE4Pw/s400/7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;">And of course, it wouldn't be a scrapbook without some photos or journaling! As I created the album, I started thinking about different members of my family and my memories of their cooking skills. Each tag is for a different family member. One of my favorite memories growing up is my Grandpa making us biscuits and gravy for breakfast whenever we spent the night. I learned to make gravy by watching him do it and to this day, it's one of the few things I can make well and without a recipe!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH9wznWCBDDSkJx-2usoLiQXjwIz9q_R44J6vypRjvtyik2qzgjPTGcUHXBoIX0iMqWhallKEGk6UJZN1Q9TdD9uGQ-oYnffKF3PxOX8R0u0aX9el2CtK4r8_RpMJd6RsRhdEXo2-hMUPn/s1600/10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" qx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgH9wznWCBDDSkJx-2usoLiQXjwIz9q_R44J6vypRjvtyik2qzgjPTGcUHXBoIX0iMqWhallKEGk6UJZN1Q9TdD9uGQ-oYnffKF3PxOX8R0u0aX9el2CtK4r8_RpMJd6RsRhdEXo2-hMUPn/s400/10.jpg" width="287" /></a></div>Debbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07618604206341185891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3813049979185704880.post-42146953762240547012010-07-23T18:20:00.000-07:002010-07-23T18:20:13.141-07:00See you at the fair!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPz-m_L1tJ08ztjrHBaYNUiQBYN8MhQ6qFFIjr2PrXiTuku4NF1oKNPwvtNFlADBOY2ZLHFQlWm3ygu3vJMUGl9rumFRBmScJY4scYQ_sAkCpFSFwCe2EGQxr5XiS23SAtqP3K2v9NyfFY/s1600/1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="467" hw="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiPz-m_L1tJ08ztjrHBaYNUiQBYN8MhQ6qFFIjr2PrXiTuku4NF1oKNPwvtNFlADBOY2ZLHFQlWm3ygu3vJMUGl9rumFRBmScJY4scYQ_sAkCpFSFwCe2EGQxr5XiS23SAtqP3K2v9NyfFY/s640/1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Well it's county fair time here and in the county I live, it's a really big deal! I love making mini albums so I decided to create one highlighting all my past memories of the fair. I even talked my husband into taking it over this week so it can be displayed in the Family Arts building. The fair opens Sunday and we can't wait! For the album, I used October Afternoon and Cosmo Cricket papers, both of which are quickly becoming my favorites. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

</div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I'm so glad to be part of the design team at <a href="http://creativelyyourssketches.blogspot.com/">Sketches: Creatively Yours</a>. It sounds cliche' but it never ceases to amaze me how one sketch can inspire such a wide variety of layouts, all of them unique in their own way. Be sure to stop over to check out this week's sketch. My interpretation uses a layout of a photo my mom took of me when I was three or four. I distinctly remember us going out into our yard and her having me hold my birthday cake. I was wearing a dress my grandparents had gotten me. Although the photo is black and white, I remember the dress was brown plaid and the lawn chair was teal. It's also amusing to me the "quality" of this photo. It was taken back in the day when getting photos centered was easier said than done, definitely some "parallax phenomenon" going on here with part of me being cut out of the photo!</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJuuRAFqowESRBviZjIseDmF0E5WaFsAv-K6YmOm1hgvUzV3yY_1sJl4Fijxr_gb44CWXd1adyatPsFeqG_Brh45-Sv7ot9iN6mtBuOcZBHDQW4laCVa80-pOWi_x461T1Ya1jEL7948wb/s1600/Debbie+Ridlen+lo+%2339+due+June+24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" ru="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJuuRAFqowESRBviZjIseDmF0E5WaFsAv-K6YmOm1hgvUzV3yY_1sJl4Fijxr_gb44CWXd1adyatPsFeqG_Brh45-Sv7ot9iN6mtBuOcZBHDQW4laCVa80-pOWi_x461T1Ya1jEL7948wb/s400/Debbie+Ridlen+lo+%2339+due+June+24.jpg" width="398" /></a></div>Debbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07618604206341185891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3813049979185704880.post-63632267032264450582010-05-25T17:44:00.000-07:002010-05-25T17:44:42.567-07:00Back again<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Whew, it's been a while since I've posted! The sketch is for a card, but could quite easily be adapted to a layout or even a mini book. The spring card above is my interpretation. The sketch is so versatile I'm sure I'll use it often!<br />
<br />
One of my blessings this week has been watching my son's track meets. This is his first year in track. Among other things, it means he is one of the slower runners. But I'm so proud of him and how hard he works to beat his personal best times. Not only is he now in great shape, he's made some very close friendships I'm certain will long outlast the track season. And it's a great way for his mom to practice action photography! <br />

Be sure to check out the blog for all the inspiration this week! My daughter has entered into her teenage years, and sometimes struggles with self esteem issues that many teens face. I wanted to create something to remind her of how beautiful she really is and how her beauty shines brightly to those who know her.<br />

<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">Just a quick card to share. With Spring and the Easter season quickly approaching, this card is cute and simple to make. To create the chickie, punch or cut a large circle from cardsock. The feathers at the top are the tops of punched heart shapes. To make the beak and wing, cut a punched heart in half. The bottom half becomes the beak, and top is used for the wing. Add a button eye and thin cardstock strips for legs. So easy!</div><div class="separator" style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none; clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-_S93szeuymFrt_DLrLLzV-D_QX3SBx7LDQd-iqV8c491JH5Ne69cAw41zfaL1VLD1maY_xM4j30fn7FbErI9FZ-0qSZUsEM_Wrqp1rlzmV_LBbTH1dvC_ePvc2Bw1UTU44EL4eu49vef/s1600/chickee.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="347" nt="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-_S93szeuymFrt_DLrLLzV-D_QX3SBx7LDQd-iqV8c491JH5Ne69cAw41zfaL1VLD1maY_xM4j30fn7FbErI9FZ-0qSZUsEM_Wrqp1rlzmV_LBbTH1dvC_ePvc2Bw1UTU44EL4eu49vef/s400/chickee.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>Debbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07618604206341185891noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3813049979185704880.post-88349603533992862452010-03-29T18:22:00.000-07:002010-03-29T18:22:23.459-07:00Woo Hoo!<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">I was very excited to learn I've been selected as a new Design Team member at <a href="http://creativelyyourssketches.blogspot.com/">Sketches: Creatively Yours</a>. What an honor to be chosen amidst the talented designers who post their sketch interpretations each month! Below is my interpretation of the design team application sketch. The cute Maya Road key album was a great way to showcase family photos and also serves as a reminder to myself of what's really important in our family life. In the process of creating it, I discovered some new ways to stretch my ever-growing stash of letter stickers... an added bonus! <br />
<br />
I had some black American Crafts chipboard "Thickers" but they just didn't match the color scheme I had chosen for the album. So I peeled off the top layer of the chipboard letters:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm_bwVzxMEIRAErpAz7n1ii0y8R3LbyS4lu44lDZGAYCIfIy8BHH50ark-N8zn8wBLe1IUbjp4rPAQAzqpGJ8zRxBwgxFMZFIBsdgXyioo911JJP1V7UrGjs91yeGIY7mAnvMXIzKmz4y6/s1600/letter1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="282" nt="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjm_bwVzxMEIRAErpAz7n1ii0y8R3LbyS4lu44lDZGAYCIfIy8BHH50ark-N8zn8wBLe1IUbjp4rPAQAzqpGJ8zRxBwgxFMZFIBsdgXyioo911JJP1V7UrGjs91yeGIY7mAnvMXIzKmz4y6/s400/letter1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Then used an acrylic paint dabber to paint the plain chipboard white:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNntF9ZdqCZy0TePfQ-eiiad-LMkFn1sgKCp0behhHt9RDnxUJDRI2nMZyS7LXHfd7TjaIbSjN9KUNIL7qpY5bc0mf06yNws1Su3DxGUp-n6xKf5hwkiekyAOHNRWeF5eACDE3CKl4XRFL/s1600/letter2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="290" nt="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNntF9ZdqCZy0TePfQ-eiiad-LMkFn1sgKCp0behhHt9RDnxUJDRI2nMZyS7LXHfd7TjaIbSjN9KUNIL7qpY5bc0mf06yNws1Su3DxGUp-n6xKf5hwkiekyAOHNRWeF5eACDE3CKl4XRFL/s400/letter2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Once the paint dried, I spread pink Stickles glitter glue on each letter:<br />
<div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUoDVXxHPgoGKioucGBX5A8rx18k67euv47N0IhpAiMe05QJh2RPcxI7EUujHy4ZFB_gzrQVOUECPFByyKDXfB8mSQ_Dv4Twf6r48iwyN0ibbu8QBXWHU7enNM_IamqJL03SOgapNH8Ocp/s1600/letter3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="175" nt="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUoDVXxHPgoGKioucGBX5A8rx18k67euv47N0IhpAiMe05QJh2RPcxI7EUujHy4ZFB_gzrQVOUECPFByyKDXfB8mSQ_Dv4Twf6r48iwyN0ibbu8QBXWHU7enNM_IamqJL03SOgapNH8Ocp/s400/letter3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div align="left" class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The final result was completely different than the original black letters:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Q-tm4CYwgeBLg8CWoXU2bOLTyi9eSMfonHWqaDWrBJjdUXDtpJodcAAa3ZM_NyOzQknw7PSkG00MmZ4a_QfgmVR6gOGaAYUjUQOJ_8jwBXtpktjga6scvKdVxTXduClwggLwIm7f9dil/s1600/letter4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="211" nt="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Q-tm4CYwgeBLg8CWoXU2bOLTyi9eSMfonHWqaDWrBJjdUXDtpJodcAAa3ZM_NyOzQknw7PSkG00MmZ4a_QfgmVR6gOGaAYUjUQOJ_8jwBXtpktjga6scvKdVxTXduClwggLwIm7f9dil/s400/letter4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

So much fun! For each flower, I punched two flower shapes from a five petal flower punch. On one punched shape, I lightly curled each petal downward. On the remaining one, I pinched the center of the flower, forcing all the petals to point upward. Then I gently manipulated each petal to create the flower shape shown. I adhered both flowers to the page with liquid adhesive, then added a button to the center of each. I love the results and it is so easy once you give it a try! <br />

There is a wildlife refuge near where we live, and I'll admit... when I'd been there in the past, I thought it was B-O-R-I-N-G!! She kept telling me how she and her husband would get up at 5 a.m. on Sunday mornings to drive slowly through the refuge to snap photos of whatever happened to wander out of the woods. I thought she was crazy. Until one weekend, I asked my outdoorsman 13 year old if he'd like to go with me just to see what the big deal was. I was instantly hooked! I am notoriously NOT a morning person, especially on weekends, but it was so peaceful there. And it was a great way to connect with my son. For my friend's birthday, I wanted to create something special, something that would make her feel like she was there. I took some of my own photos, collected twigs and brush from the roadside there and created this mini album for her. After almost five years, she still displays it in her office. The album itself is a bound chipboard book. I inked the outside cover with brown ink and tied wood beads to it with twine to give the album a natural, outdoors feel.<span style="font-size:78%;"></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5448724066388773538" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 400px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 235px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-UWkT9ZOaHVQMXPsoKa_4pVWUKUzLFGYRDXBaCTJ2nGTtdWuyu30zY-CRzHCrSnXdx1Np7eVfBbiLxQCMHeeHBBfndy4n-dK7MLUMZjDiEu4LXpPuz3-V0RyTNg-kmSLsBjh8_x8ICbXe/s400/af2.jpg" border="0" /></span> <span style="font-size:78%;"><span style="font-size:85%;">My friend driving through the wildlife refuge. Warmer days, no more snow, beautiful colors, new life... it can't get here soon enough for me! I found this little wood bunny sign at a craft store. He was plain wood, just waiting for some paint to make him come alive! I painted all the edges with ivory acrylic paint, then traced his outline onto ivory cardstock and various patterned papers from <a href="http://g45papers.com/">Graphic 45</a>. I added button eyes, gave him rosy cheeks with pink chalk and tied a few fabric strips to the wire hanger. Now he's all ready to "Welcome" Spring to our house! </div>Debbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07618604206341185891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3813049979185704880.post-7671765692457052562010-02-28T13:13:00.000-08:002010-02-28T13:48:16.287-08:00Every new beginning...<div>There's a song with the line, "Every new beginning marks some other beginning's end..." That kind of describes our week. On Thursday I taught my last class at <a href="http://www.bloominscrapbooks.blogspot.com/">Bloomin Scrapbooks.</a> I've been fortunate to have been on their design team the last few years and have met so many wonderful people through the experience. I'm sad to see the store close but am so thankful for the memories left in its place. Here is the layout from my first class in 2006:<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443408981786988738" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 164px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6VA6CYh7U6BKp0umJCK5DucXqsKWSL4uQOgOJEwWuPIVSclqgJozlZRQUoqbQtHS_ccVo5PbqN6V6jSLyoxfk1gVzaYfCmwNMEJXi5_dj27VEwvL-lvJZu1dcUEfRJ2O0Hn1UgVMHdEcb/s320/f3.jpg" border="0" /></div><div>Then on Friday, my 17 year old had the last basketball game of his school career. He's been playing since 4th grade, so this marked our eighth season of games. It's been a frustrating year for him with most games being watched from the bench and we knew this would be his final season. He had acted like it didn't bother him, but once the game was over and the players returned from the locker room, I could tell his eyes were red. Later I asked if the coaches had said something to him, and he said, "No I was just emotional because it was my last one." Boy, that tugged at my heartstrings... Oh well, track practice starts Monday! </div><br /><div align="center">5th Grade Tournament Runner's Up<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443412646107766514" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 253px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOpsLkc4rFzgSG9dpf-apRgIs3WbbydOyEwgXb5CW9lk7r6d6vgvvS1Ik4Raejoh8cMEkdtPxrZoGS_S_xm8nikI2ts9zQmHbTcwlk9aivPRYhVvGjwC7YtfRA6nmXhlWEGZM4qPWSBt5Z/s320/Picture+060.jpg" border="0" /></div><br /><div align="center">Friday night: <img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5443413812122876210" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 238px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhQY9wAdixutrahPv865U9wKGBvgiB6gZ-Sg5cRgSOqL_ivjnkXINcvtzxRqSSzDwsyYRU8rGBgi0-z9okTWMCnhBkFH1J82tZVSnrvD5SLjtsKvg0kHT6UUXSK-AQTHMNVfJDbbp_O58zO/s320/2.jpg" border="0" /><br /></div><br /><div></div>Debbiehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07618604206341185891noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3813049979185704880.post-19092606258879420182010-02-21T22:40:00.000-08:002010-02-23T20:08:30.662-08:00Why I scrapbook<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr3iljF-kI4SNt_KjYie6Tyna2OGWX6DcMN9IgnbZ7BCSIKSrMmWMlRCvNbc484xqni0DlJzCkma8cBt5I38C1DhjQbB5LGbTFg2_UzyHhNL4AN5Fo0_3iiLlLN6iadgPxNPYFpMz8TseF/s1600-h/1a.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5441644605210747394" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 270px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgr3iljF-kI4SNt_KjYie6Tyna2OGWX6DcMN9IgnbZ7BCSIKSrMmWMlRCvNbc484xqni0DlJzCkma8cBt5I38C1DhjQbB5LGbTFg2_UzyHhNL4AN5Fo0_3iiLlLN6iadgPxNPYFpMz8TseF/s320/1a.jpg" border="0" /></a> A few weeks ago, I was featured in my job-related professional association newsletter. When I was interviewed for the article, one of the questions asked was "What are your hobbies?" So I immediately responded, "I like to scrapbook." Then there was a momentary silence. "Oh." I couldn't help but crack a smile. Obviously this person didn't <em>get it.</em><br /><br /><div><div><div><div><div>I love scrapbooking. It's my "happy place," my escape from the rigors of a hectic day at work. Playing with photos, paper and scissors is great relaxation! It's a way I can put into words how much I love my kids as well as tell the stories behind my photos. And I'm fortunate to have developed so many new friendships with other scrapbookers who<em> get it</em> just like I do.<br /></div><div>This is one of my favorite scrapbooks ever. It's a <a href="http://www.prima.typepad.com/">Prima</a> canvas album featuring photos of my mom as a little girl. She loved to sew and I wanted it to have lots of fabric and stitching to make it feel like "her". My favorite part of the book is the page with her toy trinkets sewed into it. I found them in an old doll case in a dresser at my Grandma's house. The one in the middle is a medallion engraved with the words "forget me not." Another is a tiny June 1954 calendar page--it was her birthday month--she had turned seven. Several people have told me some of the trinkets are Cracker Jack prizes.
